Experience as a rider is very useful to understanding and intepretation of other riders issues with bitting problems. That said understanding the science behind equine bit design, involves the horses breed type and how that affects the horses unique features. Especially with regard to equine anatomy, and physiology which are required to complete the picture so that all factors affecting bit performance can be considered as well as bridle design and noseband use.

The Business of saddle fitting involves assessment of the horse physically when stood still and standing square on a level surface and looking for any A-symmetry, muscle atrophy or abnormal muscle development, and also having considered the horses gait and movement characteristics in hand. We fit saddles for the horse when in movement not stood still, and so a very important that part of saddle fitting should be the assessment under saddle as under ridden conditions the horses back lifts and this changes the saddles contact areas. We also consider the riders height affecting leg length and position, and any difficulties the rider has physically that may affect their riding or the saddle performance. Poor fit can lead to discomfort for your horse and unwanted behaviours such as bucking, napping and moving off when the rider tries to mount. The rider in a saddle that does not fit them may find they experience back or joint pain. Importantly, both horse and human may find that they cannot do what is being asked of them. These are just some of the things involved in saddle checks and fitting that need the experience of the saddle fitter and the co-operation of the rider to ensure things are assessed correctly.

Specialising in fitting competition horses to improve comfort and improved performance as well as horses and ponies performing in all other equestrian disciplines. Saddles should be professionally checked on a regular basis typically every six months to cater for the winter and summer seasons and annually at the very least. However for horses competing at higher level under more demanding equine athletic conditions, some riders are requesting saddle checks more regularly to maximise performance and to ensure the saddle does not contribute to soreness or injury.
