Ian Taft (as a previous engineer) is used to checking very precise measurements which proved useful for the business of saddle fitting involving the measurement of shapes and curves. A correlation that is beneficial to my role as a saddle fitter checking the saddle fit and selecting the right tree design for the individual horses shape, and then advising on the best solution to suit the horse and the riders saddle needs.
Having ridden from an early age and become an experienced show jumping rider benefiting from expert training as a Junior with American Olympic showjumper Warren Wofford, before going on to ride horses for Fred Hartill of the Pennwood stable known famously for its top horse Pennwood Forgemill. And following that as working stable rider for showjumper Geoff Glazzard a leading national and international rider based at his stable in Brewood Staffordshire competing to Area International Trial and County show level standard.
I am a Lantra qualified Bridle and Bit Fitting specialist having attended and studied the approved training course through the Neue Schule Academy. During which we were concentrating on the horses physiology and the correct fitting of bridles and bits in order to maximise the horse’s comfort to relieve pressure, tension, and friction irritation so that the horse’s performance is improved through greater expression of movement. Particularly important for performance horses working at high level.
A Society of Master Saddlers qualified saddle fitter who started training with Lawrence Pearman Master Saddler leading to examination at the saddlery training centre taking the Society of Master Saddlers flocking and flocking adjustment qualification. Following that I went on to receive further training by Master Saddler David Johnson of The Saddle Company Ltd based in Walsall and as a result I became an approved saddle fitter for this Walsall company. This experience lead to further training with world renowned international saddle designer Peter Menet from Switzerland, which opened up new opportunities as an approved representative for the Amerigo and Equipe saddle ranges covering Dressage, Event and Showjumping saddles used by serious amateur, semi-professional, and professional riders, together with further support from Zebra Products the UK distributor in order to deliver these services with full back up and repair services.
I am also UK Sports Coaching certified in Safeguarding and Protecting Children (2017).
Whatever the riders choice of discipline the horses comfort under saddle is essential to ensure the maximum freedom of movement, but we must not stop there and so we must ensure the riders are accommodated correctly as well, to ensure they can concentrate on performing to their very best.
